Upgrading a VAIO XL 201

Just bought one of these and no major problems so far, but could do with help on two issues:

1. Upgrading the memory - the guidance on the VAIO website suggests you need to install two additional memory modules rather than just one - is this right? I suppose I could install a further two 512MB rather than just a single 1GB?

2. Adding an additional hard drive. I'd like to install a further seagate barracuda 500GB hard drive in one of the empty bays. Basic question: what cables do I need to buy in addition to the hard drive kit? I can see that the power cable has connectors for the two additional hard drives, but it's far from obvious where to attach the additional SATA cables - where are ports 1 2 etc?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Marvin,

You will find SATA Ports 0, 1, 2 & 3 marked on the motherboard. Port 0 will be connected to your existing hard drive in the bottom slot of your caddy.

You will just need a SATA cable for each drive to be added and I would connect Port 1 to a drive in the middle slot in the caddy and/or Port 2 to a drive in the top slot in the caddy.

Your XL201 has 4 memory slots and can use up to 3072MB of RAM. You will have 512MB modules in slot 1 and slot 3 and slots 2 & 4 will be empty. You do not have to take any memory out and you can add either 1GB or 2 X 1GB of PC2-5300 memory.

Standard Memory : 1GB (2x512MB) (Removable)
Maximum Memory : 3GB
Total Memory Slots : 4
Memory Type : DDR2 PC2-5300 (667MHz) DIMM

Have a look at CRUCIAL.COM
