Upgrading Ram

Hi. I have a Vaio Desltop PCV-RS222 and I wanted to upgrade the Ram.
According to Sony site it should have 1 x 512mb DDR in one slot. Went out and bought another DDR 512mb DDR.
Opened box to find 2 x 256 SDRAM.
Removed 1 x 256SDRAM and replaced with 1 x new 512 DDR so now 1 x 256SDRAM and 1 x 512 DDR.
Computer wasn't happy and crashed.
What is the best solution? I don't know how to proceed - any suggestions anyone.

P.S. If anyone at Sony reads this your info on memory installations is wrong.

1. when you use different RAM, you must use the same firm.
2. when you use different RAM from the same firm, you must use RAM of the same series(for best compatibility)
3. when you use different RAM from the same firm and from the same series, you can't use DUAL RAM(you use this?, I don't know, Sorry)

check the Bios for RAM timings, you must you the same timings for both RAMs

Is the new RAM faster as the old? Make the new RAM slower.

Your old RAM use 266MHz, the new must have the same(you can change this in the Bios).

This is something that really p¿s me off about Sony Notebooks. Why fill two banks with memory when one will suffice. To upgrade to a sensible level you are required to jettison all of the installed memory and start again. Sony probably hopes that you will buy the replacement memory from them and thus swell their coffers but there are plenty of other suppliers out there. To come back to specifics, I agree with Seb, you need two compatible memory chips.

Thanks for your reply. I am not very technical but do you mean that to upgrade I actually have to buy 2 x 512mb - I can't have 1 x 256 and 1 x 512?
Can I mix DDr and SDR?

Today I've made a system recover. I must first set the systemconfiguration correctly, must install photoshop, and ,and, and.


And problem is the Avatar.
I mean the size. It's limited to 150*150 pixels(that's not the problem),
but using max. 60000 Bytes............

..........it makes difficult, to make a cool looking animated PINGU GIF-file

I thing tommorow it's ready.
