Upgrading

I have a sony notebook with 256 meg of ram. It is running too slow and I want to install more memory. The handbook says it can take up to 512 meg but would prefer to go to 1 meg. Is this possible and is it safe. Anyone with experience please help
Thanks
My model is PCG - FX701

Your manual reads maximum capacity of 512MB. I'd stick to that if I were you. It is the manufacturer's capacity, thus if you try to exceed that, I doubt the RAM will be be effective (i.e. function properly).

Crucial also states that your FX701 can hold a maximum of 512MB.
I've never exceeded the limit but I think should anyone do that, the system may fail to run correctly. Otherwise perhaps totally rework your laptop e.g. replace motherboard & BIOS etc., or buy a brand new system that will suit your needs.

Go here and read the technical FAQs, they've readily answered a lot of frequent queries: http://www.crucial.com/support/contact_forms/tech_support.asp

512MB will speed up your notebook, you will notice a difference.

Yeah.

And for those which never worked with 256MB Ram. Check this out:

    click start
    run
    type "msconfic" and click OK
    click the tab "BOOT.INI"
    click on "extended functions"
    enable "MAXMEM" and typ 256
click OK and restart your VAIO
Now your VAIO will work only on 256MB Ram. Just try to work with that and see whats happen. If you want the old back capacity, then just disable MAXMEM. Have fun, LOL

Oh dear Seb ROFLMFAO

128MB is enough to bring Windows XP to its knees (its Microsoft's minimum recommended memory level for Windows XP to function lol) - slow is NOT the word for this lol

Its a huge shock running on 128MB of RAM instead of 768MB RAM lol

lol try it dropping from 1024 to 128:smileycry: To say it wasn't fun is an understatement.
Thanks for that Seb time for me to annoy some friends:smileytongue:
