Four possibilities: -

1. The screen has a faullt - perhaps a cable has become detatched.  Does the hard drive spin up?

2. The CMOS Battery has become disconnected from the BIOS Chip.

3. The Memory Module may not be seated properly.

4. The BIOS Chip has a fault.

The first three may have happened when replacing the hard drive and are worth checking.  If it is 4 you will need to contact Vaio Support or one of Sony's Service Partners.

Can you see the Vaio Logo dimly if you shine a torch onto the screen?  If so it may be just the screen backlight and again could be a cabling issue or the magnetic catch that detects when the lid is closed has a fault.
