Our laptop keeps freezing - about once an hour for no apparent reason and the only thing that can fix it is a hard reboot. We are completely stumped because it happens when we are using it or even when we leave it idle. Any ideas? It is over a year old so now out of warranty. It's very frustrating to say the least!

Unfortunately it could be many things.
Check in event viewer to see if there are any clues to what is happening.
As pctech33 says, overheating is a common cause. Try downloading PC Wizard and monitor your CPU temperatures. If these get above 80 deg on a regular basis then you should get the fan checked, clean out any dust in the vents and, as a last resort, have the Vaio taken apart and cleaned.

If all else fails, have a word with one of Sony's Service Partners near to where you live. You will find a full list of UK Service Partners here: -

Try using the vaio care program and run a complete check/tune up.

Thanks for all of the ideas. We thought we had solved it by uninstalling AVG. When we downloaded the latest version, that's when the trouble started. But now, after working fine for several weeks, it's started freezing again. Will definitely look at the CPU temperature thing. Maybe that is the cause. Appreciate your help!
Hi,
Overheating is one of the frequent causes of freezing and other errors in your Sony Laptops.
So, if your laptops keeps freezing then the first and the most important thing that you would have to check is whether your fan is working or not.
If your fan is not working then you would have to buy a cooler pad for your Sony laptop.
The cooler pad which sits under your laptop would prevent it from getting overheated.
