The keyboard does lots of weird things for about a week - e.g. the back delete key will only delete one character even when it is held down - and then it 'cures' itself for a bit.  I am technically a cretin but even so, I wish I had never bought this machine.

Have it replaced if you just bought it and have it checked by a technical person. This is definitely a keyboard problem.

Hi TechnOphobe,

This may very well be hardware related by I would check that ‘Sticky Keys’ hasn’t been inadvertently turned on. In Vista you can check this in Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Make the Keyboard easier to use; navigation may be slightly different with Win 7.

You could also try a system restore back to a date prior to this happening.
