WiFi when in Vista sleep mode

When I turn my laptop into sleep mode the 'WLAN' indicator stays on, which makes me believe that some kind of 'wake on LAN' function is turned on. This is not bad when I have the power cable plugged in. When travelling though it is still on and my battery is empty within a day. Does anyone know how to turn off this function (I mean automatically, I know there is a switch on my laptop) or other ways to turn down battery use in sleep mode?

If you're not using the notebook for > 3hrs I would click start and turn off rather than stadby or sleep.
