Cannot update firmware on WF-1000X wireless earphones

I’ve tried to update the software on the WF-1000X wireless earphones using the Sony iOS app. Each time I’ve tried (four times so far) the bar gets to about 50% and then displays the message ‘The software transfer failed’. Has anyone been able to successfully update these earphones?

Well done.  You've helped me past the ineptitude of Sony's update system.  These earphones are the worst purchase I have made, particularly with the continual right ear dropout.  Not sure why I expect this upgrade to suddenly make them okay, (the previous ones haven't and Sony's help on this problem is useless (see forum page on this issue) but I appreciate your post.

For me switching off ASC (Ambient Sound Control) fixed the problem with the right earbud dropping out frequently. The firmware update did not solve it. If I switch on ASC the drop outs still happen. Keeping ASC off is not a big loss for me. I find the feature to be of little value.
