WF-1000 XM3 Does Not Support VOIP Calls, Really?

So I had my eyes on these ear buds for quite some time and my girlfriend just bought them to me for my birthday. I was excited!

I immediately unboxed them, sync'd to my phone and played around with some of the settings. I was very happy with the sound quality coming from these things. The low end was impressive!

Then Monday came and it was time for work. I was looking forward to using these for calls so got my Bluetooth sync'd up to my laptop and the first call I had, there was this really strange audio glitch occurring randomly. It almost sounded like someone moving the needle on a record player and tearing the sound, for a split second.

It's EXTREMELY distracting. The issue seemed to happen way more frequently in the left earbud than the right.

I thought it may have been a Zoom issue or maybe a laptop issue. I tried Zoom on my phone. Same issue.

Then I tried Messenger - which I use a lot when calling/receiving calls from friends and family. The audio was atrocious. It sounded so badly distorted that it was completely unusable.

The Zoom issue was nowhere near as bad than Messenger, but still pretty unusable.

I ended up calling Sony support and the guy got me to do a factory reset of the earbuds and I made a couple of calls with them over messenger and it sounded pretty alright. I thought I heard the little "tear" glitch sound once but figured I wasn't going to confirm or deny if the fix worked on the phone with this guy and I'd test some more over the next day.

Well I had Zoom call to do an hour ago and the issue persists.

I am SUPER disappointed. How the hell in this day and age can a company like Sony create earbuds like these that don't work with VOIP call applications.

Please someone tell me that I'm missing something here!! I really don't want to send these back and if there is some kind of fix, I'd love to know about it. I just want them to double as a work headset so I can get full satisfaction out of the price paid for these.

I was on the last version (3.0.0) btw before the guy got me to do the factory reset.

Hi,

Have you tried to do the calls without Noise Cancelling being activated?

Cheers

I have. I've tried everything before the factory reset.

Disabled all the audio options I have turned on in the mobile app. Tried
flipping through the different audio types by touching the sensor on the
left ear bud.

Hi @hiSurr

I don't think the headphones "care" about the audio source, as long as the connected device sends the signal properly, the headphones will produce Sound. So the question here is whether you notice the same "glitch" when using the headphones for normal calls.

On the other hand, the fact that you hear the same issue when connected to two different devices (PC/phone) indicates it's not a connection issue.

If you have other BT headphones, test them with Zoom to check if you notice any similar problems.
