ATSC 3.0 and the Sony A90J TV ?

Hi guys,

I am new to the Sony forums, and if this is posted in the wrong area, please let me know so I can pop it in the correct forum.

Thanks in advance for any explanations or help.

I am probably going to buy the Sony A90J TV (2021).

I note that on some reviews of the Sony A90J TV that mention is made of having an ATSC 3.0 capability.

I have tried to find out about this but I am not clear - what ATSC 3.0 is all about and particularly whether it is - or will be - relevant in the UK.

MY VERY LIMITED UNDERSTANDING

  • If appears to me that the main intention seems to be the reception of 'channels' in HD or even 4K resolution.  This seems to be currently offered in the US in some states (2021)  giving the abilty to access the various ATSC3.0 channels all being received by a (normal?) aerial.

  • In addition, I get the impression ATSC3.0 can be transmitted over the internet giving the ability to connect via a user's home internet connection (router?)

BTW Sorry about any errors or misunderstandings.  This is all new to me.

QUESTIONS

  • So, I would be grateful for some basic clarification please of whether it could be setup (even at all!)  in the UK using the Sony A90J. Do we use ATSC3.0 in the UK?  Can it even work in the UK and are there UK ATSC3.0 channels in the UK?

  • Also, would I be right in thinking that if the TV was connected by ethernet to my router here in the UK that I would be able to access the ATSC 3.0 channels in the US via the internet without having to use a VPN connection ?

Once again, I'm sorry if I've got this all wrong.  I'd really appreciate some knowledgable people to provide correct information !

Thanks in advance guys.

To give more info as I understand it (which may not be 100% accurate): essentially, ATSC is how the TV "sees/receives" the channels in the US while for the UK (I believe Europe in general) the system is called DVB-T/T2.

The feature is only available on the models that can actually use this feature. Comparing the US and UK specifications, you can see the US model supports ATSC while the UK one does not.

It's under the "Built-in Tuner" section, the point marked as "TV System (Digital Terrestrial)".

Hope this helps!
