I have the same issue or similar issue, so far my phone hasn't been able to recognize a single face, I even posted here and some other blogs but so far NO solution or explanation or how to.

In your camera mode, you'll find that you can select face recognition under setting.

Now what it does is to make sure all the faces are looking at the camera before the shot is made. This is similar to the smile detection function. It works well on a cyber-shot camera. However, the shutter lag on this phone doesn't make the use of this function very encouraging. It simply adds to that uncomfortable lag.

My recommendation is to leave it be until the 2.1 camera upgrade.

Yeah but even after Face Detection its on it still wont recognize friends, even after I took a picture of someone -> tag it -> take a second picture in similar position, light, etc it won't recognize the person, and so far I haven't meet anyone that got it to work on their X10

Hmm... I tried it before it seems to be working fine. But then again, you guys have to understand that SE ported this function from their own OS to Android for branding purposes. So there is bound to be some errors in this case. Let's just see at the end of this or next week if the update will "cure" us all.

This sucks, but I was expecting this. o far I think only Samsung has been fairly consistent with the screen quality.

darkmax @ You means in android 1.6 version now, we can't use this function but the update 2.1 can use it. right!

I mean it might work. And the leaked roadmap seems to indicate camera fixes in 2.1.

I think you are mistaking face detection for face recognition

Did you not bother with the manual?

Face detection

You can use face detection to bring an off-centre face into focus. The camera automatically detects up to five faces, indicated by white frames. A green frame shows which face has been selected for focus. Focus is set to the face closest to the camera. You can also tap one of the frames to select which face should be in focus.

To set face detection

  1. Activate the camera.
  2. If the still camera is not selected, tap the camera icon
  3. Tap the focus settings key in the viewfinder.
  4. Tap the face recognition icon

To take a photo using face detection

  1. With "Face detection" set, point the camera at your subject. Each detected face is framed.
  2. You can tap the frame you want to use focus on, or, by not tapping, let the camera select which face to focus on.
  3. Press the camera key halfway down. A green frame shows which face is in focus.
  4. To take the photo, press the camera key fully down. The photo is automatically saved on the memory card.

Face recognition is what Picassa does when you upload photos, face detection is what the X10 does and will hopefully help you take better pictures.

oh, the manual is the thing that you really should read before/whilst using the phone Slightly_smiling_Face
