Screen turning off during speakerphone calls

Is this normal? If so then I would have expected the screen to come back on again once the other party hangs up but I have to unlock my phone in order to terminate the call myself and this seems more than a little odd.

you could pull down th enotification bar.

Its the screen protector!!
Try to move it away from the sensor

This only happens when using the loudspeaker and not when putting the phone to my ear. The screen times out as per my delay setting but I then have to unlock the phone in order to end the call. I suspect this is normal behaviour but I'm just checking. It is nothing to do with the proximity sensor and I don't use a screen protector.
