Just press and hold the shortcut you don't want on the home screen until the dustbin symbol appears at the bottom of the screen.  Drag the icon to the dustbin and the shortcut will disappear from the home screen.  The application will still exist in the usual list of apps.

I think you're probably holding on to the icons for apps a bit long when you're trying to open them.  To add a shortcut to the home screen, you press and hold the icon and it will appear on the home screen.  Asd I'm here, you can also move icons around the hoime screen by pressing and holding and then dragging them to a different place on the screen, including the 3 different screens.

Hope this makes sense,  Do let us know how you get on...

I'd appreciate an extremely verbose explanation of those instructions as they don't appear to apply to my X8. There is no trash bin and no amount of holding an icon makes it create a desktop shortcut.

It is different on the X8. Touch and hold a home screen widget and "Add widget" will appear at the top of the screen,  and a little x on the widget on the home screen. You can delete the one that's there by pressing the x and confirming you wish to delete it, or tap "Add widget" and select from the list that appears.  Not sure you can add applications to the home screen, but you can organise the applications in the screens of apps by long pressing on the icons and dragging them around, including from one screen to another horizontally.  Not sure if this makes sense, but if not, or you want more verbosity, just say...
