Hi @Ben77, I apologize for the late reply!

Currently, Xperia devices running Android Pie do not support Dark mode. We cannot comment on plans to implement Dark mode in the future. However, individual third-party apps can still support Dark mode.

Note! Sony does not warrant or guarantee the performance of any third-party applications. Neither does Sony warrant or guarantee the performance of content downloaded or acquired in other ways through such applications. Similarly, Sony is not responsible for any damage or reduced performance of your device attributable to the transfer of third-party content.

I hope that answers your question and I'll make sure to forward your feedback about this! Slightly_smiling_Face

Hi Jonas, overall I am happy with my XZ1 Compact despite a few niggles since the Pie update.

The Night mode feature is now standard fare amongst most smartphones, and has proven to have health benefits relating to sleep and eye strain. I am no tech expert, but the general view in most posts is that this is simple for Sony to enable on the XZ1 Compact. For me the irony is Sony has cleverly incorporated battery care, to prolong the life of the battery / phone so that you can own your XZ1 Compact for many years. So why not keep features as up to date as possible? Especially as the fix is doable.

Lots of owners have experienced issues with Pie and many have persevered with their devices and not jumped ship to another brand. The least Sony could do as a good will gesture for these owners like myself, is to enable this feature surely?

Hi @UrbanNomad, I'm glad to hear that! Slightly_smiling_Face

I'm not sure why it has not been implemented or how hard it is to implement, so that is very hard for me to answer, since I don't work directly with the development of the software, or development in general.

Night mode would be a good addition and I will continue to forward the feedback regarding this and a dark mode, but I can't make any promises, however I would be pleased to see this myself.

Thank you for your feedback and have a nice day!

Chrome and Instagram have dark modus in the last update from xz1 Android 9... It really because everywhere on the internet you can find that this supposed only to be in Android 10.  So you can not find a button to switch on or off the dark mode... In other words you seem to be stuck on it Slightly_frowning_Face you have to use instagram and Google chrome in dark mode and you cannot turn it off... Will there be an update for this??

Hi @Johnny1975,

I did some testing and at least Instagram is dark even in Android 8.0 on an Xperia XZ1 Compact so it's not the system update that is the cause, but I read some posts that Instagram added dark mode in the latest update of their application.

I have not received dark mode in Chrome yet, but I have it in Google Keep, Google Pay and Android Messsages (in this app it can be turned off though).

For Instagram, it's hard for me to provide any support for the app, but there has to be a way to get in touch with them and ask them about this.

Hey Jonas, thank you so much for replying in my topic. I've never had the dark mode before in Instagram. Also not in previous Android versions like 7 or 8. It's possible that Instagram made a new version at the same time the Sony update was made, it would be a great coincidence but it's possible;)

My Outlook now also has a dark version since a few days, I'm starting to believe then Google mate and update for Android 10 which is also visible in Android 9. Only in Android 9 there is no possibility to turn it off or off it's just on Slightly_frowning_Face

Hi @Johnny1975, you're very welcome!

Judging by posts on tech websites and so on, the update for the Instagram application that added a dark mode/theme was released on the 8th of October. Users that are in the beta program for Instagram probably received it a bit earlier, but around that date is when it was officially released for everyone.

Do you remember when you updated your device?

To me it sounds like the app developers are adjusting their applications for Android 10 as there is a system wide dark mode there and it will probably not affect apps that don't have a dark mode option, so the developers need to add this on their own.

@Johnny1975  try going to Settings > System > About phone, find the Build number field and tap it 7 times. then go to Settings > System > Advanced > Developer options, find Night mode option and set it to Always off. it should disable dark mode in Instagram and other apps that are testing automatic dark mode.

It disables the dark mode if 'always off' mode is selected however, after a while (about 30 mins) again it switches to 'always on' mode then instagram and chrome apps become dark. I do not know how to solve that unwanted switching from off to on issue.
