My internal storage is full, even after I deleted thumbnails

Hello

My problem: Internal memory on my Z5 ist almost full. I deleted the thumbnails folder and created a new one under the same name. Nevertheless memory usage is still at the same level.

What to do?

Thanks

Maru

Hey @maru67, welcome to our boards! Slightly_smiling_Face

Thumbnails are small in size and recreate themselves after deletion since they are used in apps, so deleting the folder does not always clear up a lot of memory. However, I will gladly give you a few tips on how to free up memory on your device, but please note that all of these may not be applicable depending on what you previously have tried. Do you happen to have an SD card installed? If so, it would be wise to try to transfer as much data as possible to the SD card. To do so, go to Settings > Storage > Transfer data to SD card.

Once all data which can be moved to the SD card has been moved, you can start looking at the internal storage for ways to free up data. A good first step would be to go Settings > Storage, here you can see an overview of how much data is stored for each category under the "Internal storage" tab which is a good indication on where you need to look.

For example, if you see that Misc. is taking up a lot of data for example, you can simply press on it and a list of Miscellaneous data will appear and how much storage each entry takes up. You can here mark which of the data files you wish to delete to clear up data and then confirm by pressing the bin icon in the top right.

Cached data is also a tab under Settings > Storage that can take up a lot of space, by pressing the "Cached data" tab you'll be presented with the option to clear all cached data. Note that this will erase all the cached data for your apps, so only do this if you are OK with that. As an alternative if you don't want to delete cached data for all apps, you can enter apps manually and delete the cached data by going to Settings > Apps > App name > Clear cache.

Once you've looked over the storage menu under Settings for an indication of what takes up data, you can move on to clear data for the specific categories.

Another tip I have is that you can try uninstalling apps that you longer need that you've installed yourself, as well as uninstall updates for apps which you don't use by going to Settings > Apps > App name.

I hope those tips helped, feel free to keep me updated! If you feel that you are rather assisted in your local language, then you may also contact your Local support in order to be assisted further. smile happy

Thank you for your answer. I store pictures, music etc. on the external SD card and have moved everything possible there (eg some apps). However a lot of apps ar not moveable.

The I have identified the .thumbnail folder as of a size of aroung 2,5 GB. I have erased it and all its content, but internal memory still ist near to full.

Why is my internal memory still almost full?

The apps which you can not move are likely pre-installed apps, as these are seldom movable. I'm afraid that there are some third party apps which you can't move as well, it is up to the app developers to decide if it should be possible to move their app or not.

Regarding the Thumbnails, do you have a lot of photos stored in your device? If so, that amount of thumbnail data may be necessary.

You may try freeing up space using my tips in my previous reply, but to see why your internal memory is close to full it would be best to have a look under Settings > Storage > Internal storage. Here you will be presented with an overview of the amount of data stored for the different categories, such as apps or media.

I have exactly the same issue  System shows 97% full, even tho I've moved all large files to the SD card and cleared cache. I can see less than 3GB of apps, yet the system adds in the apps data which is on the SD card, and shows the "internal storage" as over 8GB. Why does it think the SD data is internal, and how to clear it? The OS seems to not see the data properly, and this to me is a bug needing fixed? I read on Google that deleting some other data, ie not the actual data associated with the app, cleared the problem. Any ideas, thanks?

I have the same problem too. I've tried searching over the internet to fix the bug but no luck. I think there's problem on the phone's OS. My .thumbnail file is now over 6Gb, which consume a lot of space on my Sony D6530. I hope someone can give us a chance to fix this issue.
