Hi, I've just bought a Z5c, switching to Android after years of iOS, and I was wondering:
I know that online backups to iCloud and Google Drive are encrypted by Apple and Google, so what does Sony do to secure the online backups I make via Xperia Backup & Restore?
Thanks for your help!
Hi,
I´m quite sure that Xperia Backups are not online. They are stored in your device/PC.
If you´re refering to wi-fi passwords, contacts, ... , if they are saved in Google account, it´s Google responsabiçity. Because if you reset your phone and log in with Google account, all the data will be restored, since it´s saved on there.
In iPhones you only have "Apple services". Here you Google Account, and then Sony serivices that work with your account settings.
Hi @mr_fay, welcome to our forum and congratulations on your Xperia Z5 Compact!
I have requested some more information regarding this and I will get back to you in this post when I have received it!
Since you are a new Xperia user, you can also create a backup to an SD card or if you have a computer you can download and install our Xperia Companion program which is available for both PC and Mac and create a local backup on your computer. If you need instructions on how to create the backup, have a look at the link below.

@diogosimoes4321, You can create a backup to an online account if you go to Settings > Backup & reset > Automatic backup > Select storage > Online account, or tap "More" > Manual backup > Select storage > Online account.
I hope that helps for now and I will get back to you with more information!
Hi again @mr_fay!
I have received some further information now regarding this.
The backup file created using the Xperia Backup & restore app is automatically encrypted, and kept safe using your Google sign-in. Your data will be handled according to the Sony Mobile privacy policy which you can read more about on the link below.

The backup file is encrypted on your device before the upload, and saved in encrypted form in the cloud storage after the upload.
I hope that answers your question and let me know if there is anything else I may assist you with!
