Hi @Sam1958, sorry to hear about this. 
Have you had the opportunity to try with different earphones/headphones? A good test is to start the FM radio application and then see if the message about that the cable is used as the antenna is removed when you connect the headset to your device, so if you haven't done that, please do so and report back!
