Sony support and warranty

For anyone buying a Sony TV on the strength of their support and/or warranties, I would be wary, I recently purchased a new W8 series TV from them which most days decides to "de-tune" itself, when settling down for an evenings viewing we are normally presented with the following

Until retuning (which removes your favourites) all the channels with "No event information" displayed cannot be viewed until you retune the channels, I have called Sony support many times and am usually told the case is being escalated (which it is obviously not!) and sent them well over 20 email describing the problem but the best suggestion they usually have is a factory reset (tried many times), I would not try to dissuade anyone from buying Sony as I have had some good products from them, but in the event of any problems I would be prepared for a long wait before getting anything done!

Hi there

Try turning off "Digital Auto Service Update" and see if that resolves your problem.  Instructions are here : http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/13MW802111/EN/c_digi_europe_gaf_chk_twn_co_asupdate.html

If its the problem im thinking of, a better explaination is here : http://community.sony.co.uk/t5/Home-Cinema-Projectors-Players/SVR-HDT500-HD-Recorder-losing-TV-chann...

Hope that helps.

Thanks I will give that a go, but if that is the case, surely thats a design fault? as I have another TV of a different make that does not do this and my last TV which was also a Sony never had this problem.

Hi there

I dont think its a design fault for TV manufacturers.  If anything, its the terrestrial transmission.

Freeview channels change all the time - new ones added and old ones deleted.  Days gone by, you would have to tune the TV in to get these new channels.  Manufactuers have designed a way to have an overnight update tune. This also locks onto the best signal coming from a local transmitter.  But like everything - its not a perfect world.

I guess your other TV and older Sony, did not have this feature.  If it was a design fault of Sony, their wouldnt be an option to switch it off.

Anyway, have a read from this website:

Cheers.

That seems to have worked so far, thanks for the information!, bit dissapointed with Sony though, I would have thought that with a months worth of emails and telephone calls to their support department that one of them may have been able to give me the same information.

Anyhow, alls well that ends well, thanks again!
