i think my vaio or windows xp is not shutting down properly and thats why power is being used whilst it is 'switched off'. because when the battery is not in the laptop i dont think it loses charge, (im testing this at the moment).

any suggestions if i am right?

Yes, it seems to be normal that a Computer use energy also if is the Computer off. (Which I don't like)

It's to keep the BIOS and CMOS alive and the batteries charged.

True

But what is if you disconnect all of those. (maybe a empty CMOS battery after some years?)

Probably
I guess as long as it gets some electricity then it'll be OK.
I had the GRX off for 3 months (too much fun with the RA104!) and it's working good as it always did. Thats one thing I like about this laptop, reliable.

LOL, I have the Energy Monitor and I use it at the moment.

At the moment my VAIO use approx 40 watts. But it can rise up, very fast up to 80 watts.
