I have noticed a benefit.
For example copying over a video file takes less time to go to my external drive than copying from C to D

I have noticed a benefit.

Same here, access and transfer speeds far better with the external drive.

I have a Western Digital (approx. £100 for the size you are looking for), but I don’t really think that there is much to choose between makes, apart from aesthetics, assuming the specs are equal.

Hi,
Freecom external hd drives are qiute good. They are pre-formatted and windows will recognise them without having to install any drivers(xp and 2000).
I have a 250 gb freecom classic/7200 rpm.It cost only euro150(about £108 gbp). They are available from pc world etc
