External DVD Writer with I Link

I'm confused, I've read I Link is Sony's version of Firewire (from Apple) is this correct? If so does that mean they are exactly the same?

The reason I ask is cause I have an old PCG FX705 notebook and I want a DVD burner. At first I thought I would need to buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, but then I found that I could connect with firewire, and even better that I have a firewire (I Link) port, I think??

I am looking at a DVD burner and in the specifications it says the interface is IEEE 1394 (firewire), will this work on my notebook in my 4 pin I Link port.

Yep iLink is Sony's answer to FireWire - its just Sony's name for it thats all.

All VAIO notebooks have the 4-pin firewire socket which carries only DATA, so you will need an external power adapter for the DVD burner you are thinking of purchasing, whereas 6pin sockets carry power as well. Using a 4pin to 4pin lead is best.
