Is my battery dead? 'On AC Power'

My Sony laptop VGN-FS295VP switched off today when unplugged and didn't work from battery.
I noticed the icon says 'On AC Power' instead of '100% charging' which is what it usually says.
I'm using XP Professional and my laptop is two years old. Does this mean my battery is dead?
If so which is the best place to get a new one please?
