Pioneer DVR-K16M strange behaviour

This is the drive of my VAIO FE-11S laptop that I bought a couple of months ago (May 2006). The official firmware is still 1.00 and there hasn't been a firmware update at the drivers & updates section. The issue is that after only a few successfull DVD burns the drive now produces DVD coasters although in Nero no error messages appear, i.e. "Burn was completed successfully". I have tried with several DVD brands (Verbatim, TDK, Tayo Yuden) and with + and - formats but the drive keeps producing DVDs that cannot be read by another DVD reader, not even by itself. Another funny thing is that there are no problems with CD burning.
Is this an issue that could be fixed by a firmware update or am I heading for a replacement?

I use the latest Nero version & DMA is enabled.
