Pointer freezes every now and then

Hi. My pointer keeps freezing momentarily, and sometime just slows down, even when I'm not running many programs at all - just IE and Outlook. Any ideas what could help? Thx

I've got a mouse now, which moves the pointer reliably, but the touchpad still responds very slowly sometimes. It seems to be playing second fiddle to some other processes. I wonder if it could be given higher priority.
