pointer/ mouse device problems

the two buttons below the mouse/pointer device on my vaio FS515E are not working properly and sometimes not at all.

is this likely to be physical wear and tear or could it be driver related?

i apologise if this is an obvious question!

could someone point me in the right direction for a driver update?

its an Alps Pointing Device for VAIO....

any help much appreciated!

Hi fergadeth,

It doesn't sound good - the fact that it is intermittent means that it is almost certainly a hardware problem. It may be worth a poke around inside to see if there is a loose cable!!

It is worth reinstalling the Alps driver either from your C:\Drivers\Pointing folder or by trying to install the latest version which Sony provides for the SZ7-Series downgrade to XP. It will be the 8_POINTING.ZIP file available here: -

ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/PUB/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/SZ7/DRIVERS/

I presume your Vaio is out of warranty. You could try ordering the parts and fitting them yourself but it looks like you will need the entire Palmrest Assembly at $160.57 plus shipping: -

It may be worth contacting NextTronics by e-mail to check if smaller parts are available - you can buy the buttons for $35.76 but I'm not sure what this includes.

I attach the FS-Series Manual in case you want to look inside for any poor connections.
