Problems with Laptop Keyboard

Pardon me if I'm not following all the rules, but I'm a newbie.

My daughter has brought back a 2-3 year old FX804 from Uni reporting that it's unusable - type the 6 or g keys and you get both. Similarly with - and ;. And in a CommandWindow, i does the same as F9, prompting "Enter Command Number".

At first I thought this was some crazy virus, but today I've done a System Restore and it's the same. I now presume it's a physical problem with the keyboard. So can anyone confirm that a problem in the keyboard can 'equate' keys that are above each other by 2 rows, and how do I go about getting a new keyboard - will this be worth it? Or any other suggestion?

Thanks

You could also try an external USB keyboard.
