VGN-S1XP does not recognise cds or dvd's

Hi, my 18 month old notebook (VGN-S1XP) does not recognise cd's or dvd's. As a novice does anyone have any suggestions of where I might start ?

Hi msc66,

Unfortunately this usually indicates that the optical drive has a hardware fault. However, have a look at Device Manager and check for any error messages for this drive.

Thanks. Further investigation shows that the drive will infact play cd's but will not recognise that there is a dvd in the drive - either pre recorded or recordable. I have checked device manager and no problems are identified. Any suggestions ?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it does sound as though your drive has a hardware fault. You have two options available to you – ether a replacement internal drive or a USB external drive.
