why can I pair bluetooth peripherals ok but still they won't communicate?

This is a Vaio laptop model VPCEB1A4E running Win7.

I have tried to pair via bluetooth with e.g. a Samsung Galaxy phone and Creative D200 speakers. These devices work perfectly well via bluetooth with other computers (and with each other).

On the very first occasion I tried installing the Creative speakers they worked for a few minutes only, then never again, nor has any other bluetooth device.

The devices are seen by the laptop ok, and paired, but then something goes wrong in automatically downloading and installing the driver. Windows reports it is not correctly installed. An error message suggests restarting the laptop or the device. This has no effect. A yellow triangle shows next to the device in the hardware list.

I have tried going to the model page on the Sony website and updating the driver; I have also tried updating via Windows. There is no other third party bluetooth software installed.

Is some level of factory reset necessary, and can I do that without losing everything on the laptop?

Most grateful for any level of help or suggestion.
