Hello everyone and thank you all for reporting this behaviour.

As mentioned by some users already, the latest version of the Google Photos application (4.23.x.xxxxxxx) includes a fix for this, so please have a look in the Google Play store and see if there is an update available.

For me, that update showed up yesterday and based on the posts by @blegs and @Korben-Dallas who received the update a bit earlier, it should hopefully be available to all users now.

Thanks again for the reports and have a fantastic day! Slightly_smiling_Face

Go into Settings - Display, and you can alter the display modes there.

What is probably happening is Creator mode is activating.

The settings in Display are self explanitory, with descriptions for each one, and for the settings you pick, there is a brief blurb on each one, assisting you so you can set it up the best you can, for  photos/video/media.

Ah..Google Photos app..that issue has been there for an age, the Auto Brightness/Darkness issue.

No fix ever, and I doubt there will be one.

Personally, I would just avoid it then, and use Album/Drive/Amazon Photos or another storage system for storing of photos, or a pc/tablet/usb drive, and use Lightroom/Snapseed or another app to edit them in.

I have the same issue I just use the built in photo app but use google photos as the back up. Havent found a fix and it has only happened recently, but I am assuming its one Google and not Sony.

This is very much a Sony issue. Sony have selected certain apps to display in 4K and creator mode, google photos being one of them. The problem is its such a janky transition. Hopefully sony sorts this out in future update.

But this is sony so other than security updates I wouldn't hold your breath!

@ jimbo87,

Yes, it's very much a Sony issue, so much so, it affects, Huawei, Zenphone, Oneplus, Samsung, among other brands.

Lots of users, with lots of brands, reporting this issue for a while now, in Googles support section.

Looks to be something to do with an Auto Brightness fix, or lack of.

I have this issue also. Recently new xperia 1 never had an issue before not sure if its braught in with the update or google or even the phone. Tried all settings and no joy.

The issue is with the latest update to Google photos. Revert back to the last version, and the issue is gone. I just turned off auto app updates until a fix.

If creator mode was active, the icon would show on notification bar.

It's not creator mode.
