I have been around the block on this issue and it's incredibly frustrating. My phone operator doesn't know for sure what to do, and Sony says the issue is with my phone network. Singularly unhelpful, it won't even send me step-by-step instructions on what the procedure is for my Xperia 1 ii (not all phone manufacturers use the same methods for enabling and disabling RCS etc eg Samsung and Apple differ from Sony's approach, it would seem).
What I would like to know is whether anyone has resolved this issue (I cannot be the only Sony mobile owner who has ported their number across and prefers the RCS protocol over the inferior SMS/MMS application) and what the step-by-step methods are for achieving it and how long it takes to come into effect - I have consulted many a community forum and website, but as yet to no avail and I'm beginning to lose the will to live, ever so slightly!

In the end I spoke to someone familiar with the issue in EE Tech Support, who listened patiently and knew exactly what to do.
She sent me out a new SIM card with my ported number already set up for use. In the meantime I just had to refresh some settings by restarting the device. When the SIM card arrived it was just a case of typing my ported number into EE's designated 'SIM swap' URL and inputting the card's serial number after receiving a code to the phone. Then, before swapping the existing SIM card for the new one I selected the stock messages app and enabled the RCS Chats option within Message Settings.
Once I switched over the SIM card RCS recognised the correct number! Many weeks of frustration sorted out in a matter of moments! This is apparently the only surefire way in which RCS recognises ported numbers.
