I had an original Xperia 1, which would let me use my wifi and create a hotspot. I cannot believe that the tech has gone backwards.
Does anyone know why the hotspot switches off the wi-fi if I try to use it as a hotspot? The same thing happens when I switch on the hotspot, the wi fi connection switches off?
This is normal behaviour.
A hotspot is built from a mobile network connection.
It creates a WiFi network.
Here is page in the manual explaining it.
I have found a video as well.
This video shows a nice feature of Android devices in the Quick settings few people are aware of.
When you long press on the BLuetooth, WiFi, Hotspot and other tiles, the settings menu for this feature comes up at once.
No scrolling through settings to find the setting.
Jump to the desired settings with one long press on the tile.
Sorry but you are wrong as my Xperia 1 lets me use wifi and hotspot at the same time.

You're right but you're wrong.
The Sony webpage is right.
I've tested with my Xperia 1.
- take out the SIM card
- start Hotspot
- It still shows the WiFi sign and a Hotspot is set up.
- test on iPad or something without a SIM card.
- Important: Switch off auto reconnect from your the usual network connection to prevent the device skipping from the Xperia hotspot to the usual WiFi connection.
- set it to connect to the Xperia 1 hotspot.
- It indicates that there is no network connection and webpages will not be refreshed.
On my Xperia X, when hotspot was started, the WiFi sign disappeared.
Congrats!
You have discovered a software bug in the Xperia 1 software where it falsely indicates a proper connection.
Ok if it is a bug, why can I do it not only on my Sony Xperia 1, but I can also do this on my Sony Xperia Premium XZ!
Yes, I am a Sony fan, and I have had a Sony phone since the Sony Walkman phone, remember that one?
My wife has a Samsung phone, which can also do the same thing, have wi-fi on and also have a hotspot on so we can share the wi-fi in the house. So have I got 3 phones with a bug?
When you test like explained, so when you are shure to exclude other possible ways of connecting you will get the same results on other Sony devices as well.
Example:
On your wife's Samsung take out the SIM card.
Goto settings and set it to forget the WiFi connection(s) you have @home .
Take out the SIM card in your Xperia.
Set up the Hotspot from your Xperia.
Connect the Samsung to the Hotspot.
After having done so switch off the Xperia Hotspot and instruct the Xperia to forget all WiFi connections, so that it won't connect in the background.
Set up the Hotspot on the Samsung and connect the Xperia to the Samsubg Hotspot.
Share the results and don't let the Xmas dinner be spoiled by this (trivial) experimenting.
