A6500 with LA-EA3 or LA-EA4?

I'd like to use an A-Mount lens on my A6500.   This camera has phase detection but I'm confused by the information available from Sony as to whether the LA-EA3 adapter will allow autofocus to work or whether I need to go for the LA-EA4.  Does anyone know?

Hi @Stepher2000 and welcome to the Community :slight_smile:

Great camera!

If you wanted to use the EA3 with it then the lens must have autofocus motors

built into it otherwise it won't autofocus at all.

You can tell if the lens does have autofocus motors  if it has SAM or SSM on it.

Particularly older lenses do not have AF motors.

The EA4 has motors built into it so it can AF most lenses with exceptions being the STF manual focus lens

and the adapters may not be compatible with the teleconverters for A-Mount.

Hope this helps :slight_smile:

Sorry tu but in, but I'm at a loss for what to do.

I have a A6000, recently I purchesed a AL-EA3 adapter to use A mount lenses. I have a sony 18/70 lens that when used with the adapter gives only MF option. I tried to do a firmware update, but apparently the lens is not "read" by the firmware, and refuses to install.

The question is ;  Is this lens not recognized by the adapter? There is no SAM or SSM anywhere on the barrel.

Can you help? Thank you in advance

@Stepher2000 You're welcome :slight_smile:

Dont forget to upload some shots on the site :wink:

@sebastianpons

It sounds like you're lens is manual focus only, can you give me the model number?

Do other lenses work after the firmware update without the adapter?

(E.g. the kit lens you bought with the camera?)

Thank you! Lenses I have; Sony 55/200 and Sony 18/55 Both are fine with the firmware. The lens that gives me trouble is a Sony 18/70 A frame. I suspect you are right and it might be  a manual focus only... Marcs on the barrel :

Sony     N50    3083671  China.  On the inside rim : DT3.5-5/6/18-70     Macro.

The mount is plastic. I picked it up on a sale, quite cheap, with the hope of using it with a sony adapter.

I hope somebody can stablish it is the lens, because I had the idea of buying a Tamron 18/200 to use with the adaptor, and now I don't dare just in case it is faulty.

Thank you again. Waiting for your answers

Hi again

I'm a little confused as to what you mean by a cheap plastic mount,

The EA4 will attach directly to your A6000 and the A mount lens will fit directly into that.

And yes, your lens is MF only.

Cheers

Thank you for the reply. By a cheap plastic mount I mean that the bayonet is made of hard plastic.

And the adaptor I have is the LA-EA3,   not the LA-EA4.

Do you have any idea of what lenses I can use with the adapter, and keep the AF capability? I remaind you that the camera I have is the A6000.

Thank you again
