Problem opening RAW files in Imaging Edge

I cannot view or edit any images in Sony Imaging Edge, they are reported as possibly corrupted. These same files open perfectly in Lightroom, Capture One,  Camera Raw and Affinity Photo.

These files have had their metadata modified with EXIFTOOL which is an industry standard tool for manipulating metedata.

Unmodified images straight from the camera open OK.

Anyone else who uses EXIFTOOL seen this problem? EXIFTOOL is also used by lots of other software to manipulate metadate.

Hi Ian,

I'll see if I can find this out for you. Maybe someone else in the community can help in the meantime.

Thanks,

Pascale

It is a known problem, this is from the ExifTool website.

  • [2018-09-27] The Sony Imaging Edge applications give an error when trying to open ARW or ARQ images edited by ExifTool, although other RAW image utilities including Sony IDC (Sony's older RAW image converter), Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and DNG Converter, Apple Preview, dcraw, Capture One, Affinity Photo, and LibRaw's SonyPixelShift2DNG have no problems with these.

Hi ianpollen,

That's interesting. I know you've already tried different software and they seem fine, but is it possible to try a different PC? Maybe that will work. I can see that Sony recommends the environment here: http://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/www/disoft/int/pcenv/en/contents/index.html

Yes tried three different computers before I found out it was a known problem when the metadata has been modified. Sony old IDC has no problem reading the files so it is a problem in Imaging Edge.

Hi

I'll try to forward this to my Sony contact to see if they have more information.

Any update on this. I am having the same problem with some software that I am working on for a client.

We are using the ExifTool software to add tags to ARW files as part of a wider application but then the Imaging Edge tools will no longer open the file. However, there seems to be no problem with any other tools that are capable or reading ARW files.

Note the thread here on the ExifTool forum that seems to indicate that the likely issue is with the Sony software.

Although it is hard to be sure, the fact that the problem only seems to be present in the Imaging Edge tools does point to this being a problem with Sony's software.

I am happy to generate some test files that can be analysed by the developers of the software if anybody can put me in touch with them?
