65XF9005 Video App Freezes on High Bit Rate 4k

I recently updated the tv to firmware 65.10 and apart from the hdr in the menus while playing movies(grayed subs) i noticed that when i play a 4k high bit rate movie from usb 3.0 external disk in usb 3.0 port the movie freezes after playing normal for about 30-40 minutes an the only way to fix it is to restart the tv..this wasnt happening before the update

 

anyone else having this issue ? 

what is sony thinking without even testing the new firmware ? 

i am a bit dissapointed .also from the fact that it has only 2gb RAM but thats another story ...

any ideas ?

I have tried various video players, currently I use GOM, which is great for 720/1080 but anything higher as it pauses and buffers. I have had small joy by converting  files and taking out the Dolby, but again this does not work satisfactory.

Nearest I have to playing 4K on a standard player is Cyberlink DVD20 but that does not recognise all formats I have files for.

As I mentioned previously I am not an IT specialist by any means so converting files and extracting information does not come easy.

Never had much luck with VLM I suffer from pixelation when I have tried it.

My wife has Amazon Prime and they broadcast a few programs in UHD which is my only avenue at present.

Very disappointed with Sony, you can see by the amount of issues on this forum there is a problem with USB drives freezing after 30/40 mins but there response is to act surprised when you contact them

Hi

 

not sure if this was suggested already. But have you tried installing VLC on your TV? I was able to play pretty big 4K video files (HDR, DTS) just fine using it.

There's nothing you can do about it apart from removing the TrueHD track from the video file (use MKVToolNix to remove the track or Handbrake to recode the video).

 

Sony doesn't care, it's been two years and they just gone silent on me after trying to convince me it's expected behaviour - ridiculous. For them it's not an issue, your TV still works, it doesn't stop you from watching from other sources, you already gave them your money so they don't care.

 

To everyone else telling people to use 3rd party players - this in not a solution, this is a nasty workaround which creates another issues - stop wasting people's time. 

 

Sony doesn't care, deal with it, next time don't buy sony, I learned my lesson.

Hi imMike, the suggestion worked for me as well, I like VLC anyway so I don't know why you're warning people to suggest this solution? Anyway, since this is a platform to share experiences between users I believe every suggestion is worth it.

Guys, you're not exactly right.

MKV is wrong container for TrueHD. TrueHD in MKV is "broken" for VideoApp and hardware players (like x700 etc.).

There are 2 different TrueHD streams:
(1) TrueHD+AC3. This is a mixed format. There are both (alternating) TrueHD and AC3 frames in the stream.
(2) TrueHD. This stream only contains TrueHD frames and no AC3 frames.

When muxing to MKV, the AC3 frames are usually removed, so MKV TrueHD streams are usually type (2)

MKV developers known it and don't care.

 

For VideoApp TrueHD in mkv - it's stream without metadata needed for correct downconverting. => "Broken"

Why VideoApp reading all tracks in mkv file (even not supported) - big question, probably Android architecture feature.
