Broken motherboard

Broken motherboard

I have a KD Sony Bravia that I bought late 2016, last week I received an update that turned my TV crazy. Starting with an initial set up loop then in the space of 5 days resulting to not making it past the boot up screen. Speaking to Sony, they recommended I take it to a registered Sony repair shop so I did. I paid £50 to get the TV looked at; they found the motherboard had suffered damage from the update. Now I have a choice to pay 400 to replace the motherboard when I bought the TV for 500. How can Sony do this and claim no responsibility or offer help? What can I even do with the TV now? Is it worth anything?

Hi Luke,

Welcome to the community.

We'll look into this and update you when we can. In the meantime, maybe some other members can offer some advice.

Best wishes,

I have been a Sony fan for the past 35yrs and change my TV at least every 2 years .

Purchased Sony ZD9 March 2018 from local Sony centre ( awesome TV ) well ! That was until since my TV was updated 2 weeks ago I have experienced issues where TV disconnects from WiFi ( out of range etc on TV ) when you switch TV on in the morning it won't switch on , so have to switch off at socket then the TV allows you to switch on via the remote . The TV then boots up with Android logo then switched off then switches back on as normal !
All of this s since last update !

Now I had local Sony centre guy out at my house today who has informed my wife that he has done a full reboot and the issue is still there ! Told her the issue is with the motherboard and it will need to be replaced !

He mentioned to my wife that I was taking about upgrading again so instead of my 65" TV going away for repair for 2 weeks and being issued a small TV during that time , why don't I upgrade and they will take my TV in as trade-in and the price I receive will not be affected as TV during a under warranty !

I have to say I am seriously disappointed that such an expensive top of the range flagship TV should experience this kind of issue and has now made me think seriously about what manufacturer I should now consider as I don't think I would want to be spending nearly £4k on another Sony TV when this can happen after year and half 😟

Bought my sony bravia 55 inch in late 2015 from John Lewis for £1000.  Came with 5 year warranty, thank God.  Replaced motherboard TWICE in 2918 and 2019.  It's out of warranty now and it's not booting up.  Most likely due to the motherboard.  I expected better from Sony for the price.  Poor piece of kit.  Will cost me 500£ minimum to repair and only have 90 days warranty. I will never buy Sony again

Hi Lanse,

That's very unfortunate, but like you said, the TV came with a 5 years warranty and during that time Sony repaired the TV twice.
And my guess is that if this would've happened during the warranty period they would've repaired once more.
If by ''expected better'' you mean that instead of the repair you wanted a refund then I guess you should've contacted your retailer, not Sony.

Regards.
