BUG: Android 6.0.1 reboots after enabling VPN apps

I have installed via USB and tested Block This (open source) and Adguard (not together. One per time) on my KD49XD8099 with Android 6.0.1 and they simply worked great! No more annoying ads (yes, I know. Companies don't like it, especially Google, but they are perfectly legal. Also we are allowed by Android itself to install whatever we like).

The only problem is that after turning the TV off (standby) few hours, when I turn it on the television starts rebooting. Uninstalling them the television (and rebooting just in case) Android becomes "stable" again (quoted because I've got reboots even without tampering with special apps). The apps were set to enable the VPN at boot. Not that it should matter, since the reboot happens just putting the tv in standby.

Now, I do understand that an external app, not made specifically for Android TV may not work (but as I wrote they actually do the job they are made for), but if the television/Android reboots there is a (very critical) issue with the OS, not the app. To test the issue the developers just need to install the apps mentioned (again, enabling the VPN at boot).

Sometimes the tv does not want to start at all when the vpn service is still running behind.Does it happen to you too? I have to press several times the power button before it could reboot.

By the way I have asked the OpenVPN community both nvidia shield and and meizu box do not crash.  Can anyone test if setting a proxy, instead of using a vpn, will have the same effect?

I don't know. I have abandoned any test and decided to wait for 7.0. Although I have a feeling many bugs will still be there being the kernel probably the same version. Well, probably the VPN is not managed at kernel level, so it might have been fixed.

By the way the crash occurs not because the screen goes off but because of the reinitialization of the network. If the tv loses the connection while the vpn service is running the tv crashes. You may try it by forcing a connection loss turning off the wifi or unplugging the lan cable.

Yeah, I imagined as such at this point. So what it should happen is that the network goes on, the VPN gets the message and tries to switch itself on, doing the switch to the VPN something causes a kernel panic.

Actually I also noticed that the apps I use are now unstable with Android 7.0. I mean, they may force close themselves (it didn't happen in 6.0.1). I really hope Sony won't make us waiting another three months to deliver a new update hopefully fixing this and the USB issues. They are beyong outrageous.

I also have to add that I am not using an aerial, so I don't have the DTV set up (@Luigi_R do you watch regular television with it?). Maybe after turning on the tv it tries to connect to the internet to refresh the channels informations, it can't connect in an unusual way, and so it fails. Then all other processes follow until the tv reboots.

Now, if only there was a way to completely disable the digital television since I am not using it.. Maybe it would work, I mean at least I could test it.

Sorry for the late reply. Actually since I got the upgrade to Android 7 I have not been able to use vpn service at all even through OpenVPN. Do you have the same problem?

VPN.still works for me on 7.0, but still rebooting if set on boot, or if switched on immediately after waking the TV. Using OpenVPN from F droid.

One solution for those of you who either can't use VPN at all or need it to be on at boot is to share another devices internet. For example, if you have a PC connected by wifi, you can run the VPN on it and share its connection through Ethernet. Silly I know, but then again a lot of stuff with these sony TVs is unexpectedly and unneccesarily silly and buggy and requires half baked solutions it seems.

Well, yeah. I tested a similar workaround. I have the same app in my Mac and I enabled it as a proxy server in there. Then I connected my tv using my Mac as a proxy. But it. is far from being ideal. Also because for my needs (ads blocker. And yes, I want it because it is a pain to load some web pages on television with that ridicolously S. L O W SoC. Just speedtest.net is a nightmare ) the filters don't get all applied.
