KD-49XE8396 Connection Woes!

Hello there

First posting after looking through many others and am unable to find an answer there.

I have recently purchased a KD-49XE8396 and apart from the poor instructions, particularly referring to the setup, I am very happy with it.

My AV setup consists of a Sony BDV-E3100 sound system/blu ray and a BT You View box which is a Humax DTRT1000.

My difficulty is in connecting all the separates together so that we can (a) watch a DVD/Blu Ray and receive the sound through the surround sound system and (b) Watch TV from the BT Box and again hear the sound coming through the surround sound system. So far the way I have connected them together has worked satisfactorily BUT tonight I tried watching a video on Amazon Prime and could not get any sound from the speakers, only the TV speakers would pick up. When I investigated further I realised that I had no sound from the SS system when trying to watch  a Youtube clip either.

At the moment the BT box and the sound system are connected together by an optical "toslink"-type connector. The BT box is then connected via HDMI to HDMI4 on the TV and the BDV connected to the TV to HDMI1. I am not using either of the side HDMI connections (2 or 3).

What have I done wrong and what is the best way to sort the connections out so I can listen to everything I watch through the surround sound?

Any help would be appreciated

UPDATE... eventually sorted out by the very helpful Nadine on the Sony Support Team.

For others ina similar position here is the text of her response.

1- Please make sure to connected the sound bar to HDMI3 ARC on the TV, and on HDMI out ARC on the sound system: ((NB I am NOT using a soundbar but I did connect the blu ray/sound system to the ARC HDMI output (3)))

http://helpguide.sony.net/tv/eaep1/v1/en/04-04_01.html

2- Then please choose the priority of the speakers to Audio system:

Home - Settings - Sound - Speakers.

3- Then please connect the box to HDMI2, then choose Enhanced Format:

http://helpguide.sony.net/tv/eaep1/v1/en/04-09_02.html?hl=enhanced+format

It was using HDMI connections 2 and 3 (side connections) instead of 1 and 4 (rear sockets) that made the difference.
