Missing frames on USB HDD playback

When playing back recordings made on a USB HDD we get missing frames where the screen goes black for a split second. This can be every few minutes or every few seconds. This only happens on playback, not when watching live TV.

Bit embarrassing really, isn't it?

Do any of the forum mods have a line to the devs? If so, do me a favour and forward them the following:

  • Merge the changes from XH branch into the XF/XG branch that relate to the release note:
    • Resolves the black screen issue caused by High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) format decoding via the TV tuner
  • Build it and send it over, I'll test it for you
  • Note - if you brick my telly you can replace with an 80inch OLED ❤️

Hi Vivo85,

Did you try a different player for playback such as the VLC player? Does issue still occur with different players?

Hi Pentium_Gladio

This thread is about playing back videos that have been recorded from HD TV channels. Is it possible to play these in VLC? I was under the impression the recordings are encrypted and can only be played back using the TV playback interface. I will see if I can access the files from VLC and feedback.

Hi Vivo,

I guess the recorded videos can only be played on the TV. This is how the recorded feature is designed unless anyone can find an alternative.

I have been using my AG8 on satellite and have not suffered the missing frame issue on recordings. However, I have just connected a DTT antenna and recordings of HD channels have the dropped frames issue. There must be a difference in the video decoding in the Sony receiver between DVB-T and DVB-S to cause this.

I had this on my HX85 43, but cured it by swapping my 1tb usb hdd for a 500g usb SSD (Sandisk) Problem solved!

Interesting! Mine is a Seagate 1TB SSD and it does miss frames all the time when recording HD. Does that mean if I use a 500GB SSD it will work? Is it the large capacity that is causing the issues?

Ive tried a few different hdds and even an ssd but still get the black frame issue on hd recordings. The drives I currently use are 250gb on two different XF tvs and both suffer, so its not the hard drives

I have noticed this also. Recordings from satellite are fine but recordings from aerial are not.

I don't believe it is the way/how it's recorded but how it is decoded. I have recordings from when I got the tv and they were fine but after the update even they now display the fault.

I did copy a recording from the HDD to a USB 3.0 thumb drive and that still showed the fault on playback.

How has this not been fixed yet? See below youtube video as an example of how bad it is:
