Optical Output - Variable or Not

I’ve tried searching but found contradicting information. So I’ll ask straight up: is the Optical Out of the KD-65A1 variable or not? The Settings menu suggests that only the Aux or Headphone Out is controllable by the remote and I’ve seen several people flat out state so, but then some have said quite the opposite.

The sound system I’m looking at has issues with volume control over Optical, so I’d really like to know for sure before I spend several grand.

Welcome to the Sony Community! It is not entirely clear for me what do you exactly mean when you ask if "is the optical out of the A1 is variable or not?"

If you perhaps clarify what are you referring to be 'variable', maybe we could answer your question. My only guess is that you refer to sound levels. But I am in doubt if that is what you really mean, since the question won't technically make sense. The SPDIF specification does not support adjustments to sound levels on the optical carrier signal.
