Sony Media Player app doesnt see files

Hi - I have a usb stick in the Tv that the new media player app recognises, but doesn't see any files. Other apps like vlc do see the files and can play them.  The previous Oreo version of the Sony apps did see and play the files

It's an mp4 of an exercise dvd ripped with handbrake (so we don't have to find the diskeach time) and there are camera photos and videos on a sub folder (lots of them) .

However have realised it's not that it doesn't see the files - it's that it's extremely slow to index them, and doesn't do it in the background ie the app has to be on screen.

I've been watching it now for about over 20 minutes and it's only justfinished. This is a Samsung titan  stick that I've read elsewhere the pie update doesn't like.   The stick is usb3 in one of the usb 2 slots for ease of access, though I've now dug out a usb extension so may try a usb 3 slot In future

What format are these files? One thing I know for sure is that MKV support is dodgy (it's a dodgy format after all)

Same problem.

Between recoding the files to mp4 format and using a 3rd party media player from the app store i chose to use Kodi.

Alright, that makes (some) sense.

That's also the beauty of Android. You can find different apps to do what you want to do.

Happy new year!
