HDR - CX250E Built-in Microphone Settings

The mic settings available with this product are CLOSER VOICE and BUILT-IN ZOOM MIC which I can understand. But what happens if you do not select either of these options? Also, I notice when using the Zoom mic that the internal camera noises increase in volume ... is this normal?

Would love to get some advise about this please .I am a first time user of a camcorder so have very little knowledge of 'settings'.

Hello RonSid - Welcome to the Sony Forums

First of all, if you leave the microphone options unselected, the camera will just record sound with its default settings so in theory, this should just be an even mix of background noise and other sounds that are surrounding the camera.

As far as the zoom mic is concerned, this setting enables the camera to try and pick up noise from the area that it is trying to zoom in to. As a consequence, surrounding noises are amplified and a side effect of this may be that the internal camera noise is amplified as well.

There is an online user guide that may be interest to you as well as I feel that it has a better layout than the traditional manual. The specific recording settings can be viewed here:

Thanks Simon, that clearly explains the mic settings. On-Line User Guide is much better that the manual with the camera so your link is most welcome.

Because I have 'bad' experience with mic wind noise in a smart phone I purchased some 'false fur' to attach on a permanent basis over the Sony CX250 mics ... seems to work well. Link below in case others are interested. This supplier covers most models.
