SONY ST-SE500 RDS EON Analogue Hi-Fi Stereo FM AM Tuner

I'm hoping someone can help me with this please. I recently sent the above tuner abroad. Before doing so I checked it was working and in good order. It was worked my perfectly in every respect. However, having received it the buyer says the display is weak both in full brightness and dim mode and needs replacing, which I must admit rather surprises me given I checked this prior to sending.

If the display is weak can the display tube be replaced? Is the part needed still available? If so any suggestions where I can get it from and how much it would cost please? The buyer is in Canada and claims the tuner is now junk.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hi @Italydiva,

You could check with EET Europarts to see if they have this spare part in stock (but as the product is quite old, it might be unlikely).

Cheers,
Cass

Just a thought, would the lower voltage in Canada make a difference. They're 110v compared to our 220v?

The guy has sent me photos which I will try to attach - one shows display on dim setting, the other on full brightness. I didn't think it's that bad?

He said it looks brighter than it is in the photos - does this seem likely? Any thoughts?

I've asked the question - he's using a 500 va 120 to 240 isolation transformer that he runs all his 240 v things from.

If the display were to fail would it not just go completely rather than fade? I want to be fair but I don't know if his expectations of a 1998 model is a little unrealistic in terms of the 'brightness of display' he is expecting?

An help/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Usually the power shouldn’t make a difference.  I agree that from the photos, it doesn't look too bad.  The problem is that these kind of displays age over time and brightness decreases.
