Hello hope someone can help.
I am not at all techy so please bear with me.
I cannot conect my Sony Blu Ray player BDP-S370 to the internet. It is hard wired. I have two computers running without problems wirelessly. My router is the Virgin Super Hub 50Mb.
I have updated the firmware on the player and have tried putting the router back to factory settings to no avail. Have spoken several times to Sony and Virgin but not getting anywhere.
The blue ray player recognises the device connection but when trying to connect the network settings it says 'can't communicate properly with DHCP server.
Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!
PS This is my second BDP-370 Richer Sounds kindly swapped it for me
I'd firstly see if it works on another Internet connection, maybe a friends or something. The device is just plug and play so just by plugging it in is normally sufficient.
If it works on your friends connection then the issue might lie in your router somewhere. If it doesn't then I'd get it checked out by your local service centre. Right now best to narrow down the potential fault.
Thanks
I have the exact same problem, I have taken exactly the same steps as you too with the same results. I'll keep an eye on this forum to see if a solution materialises.
Virgin are very unhelpful Sony slightly more helpful with the update suggestion but it still doesn't work
Sorry I don't have a solution yet, if I find it I will post it, just wanted you to knoiw that you are not alone!
Hi,
i have a BDP-S570 but mine is connected wirelessly to the same router with no problems at all, i can say its not the router but more of a connectivity issue with the player, also Virgin cannot help with issues with BluRay players and Bravia tv's either from Sony or any other manufacturer, they only deal with connectivity issues with computers:smileyshocked:, all i can suggest is it does take several goes to connect, even though mine did it first time.
one last point i should make, read it someplace!, turn the router off at the plug wait 30 secs or so and turn back on, then try and re connect the player.
i know i made it sound like its not a problem with the router and normally its not, but doing that last thing is something Virgin always say sometimes when one loses the internet connection!
Thanks Bravia,
I've tried switching the router off many times and also tried connecting many times all to no avail.
Interestingly I just borrowed a friend's Apple TV box and the Netflix option will not display. It seems that Virgin might be able to block certain things and might be blocking the use of streaming movie sites.
One forum said to try to use a proxy but I don't understand this (there is an option in the blu-ray settings mentioning proxy)
Thanks for the reply though-someone is listening to me!
well i dont understnd it either!, all this proxy stuff and DCHP,s etc etc, maybe im old skool, beyond typing the WEP or WPA-2 keys im frazzled as for your proxy server you may find it in the menu under set up then internet settings then wired set up and you should find what you need in there.
if you make a mistake i suppose you can re set the unit and start again, but plz, dont hold me to that!
good luck with it.
Well check this out then-I reset the Apple TV (with friend's permission) back to factory settings and it updated properly which it evidently had not done before and Apple TV started working all singing all dancing with Netflix.
Here's the thing: Still no joy with the Blu-ray so I just thought, I'll swap the ethernet cables around-they are all tested and working but lets try anyway. The Blu-ray connmected all of a sudden and seems to be working perfectly.
Why this happened I do not know-the ports worked before and still work now. Did the Apple TV unit reset unlock something in the router or at Virgin? Did swapping cables over do this?
I'm happy that it is working but would love to know why-just in case it happens again.
Anyhow that is my contribution so far and I'll let you know if it drops off again.
i have had this problem with both my sony blu ray s380 and a humax freeview tuner, and i have just sorted it - you can try what i did and i hope it works for you
i think the problem is where the router tries to automatically assign an ip address and other codes to the player, and for some reason it does not work (not sure why)
my solution was to set up these network addresses manually, the secret is knowing what to put in
i cant tell you exactly what menu selection you have to make as your player is a differenet model but here is the gist of it:
go into a setup screen that lets you set up network settings
do not choose automatic (dchp), choose the option that lets you set it manually
find out what your router ip address is, not from the blu ray player, this will have come wit hthe router documentation, or you can probably google it for your make of router. mine is 192.168.1.1 which is a very common router address. you will use this as the basis for giving your p[layer its own ip address
eventually you will get to a screen that asks for all sorts of codes and this is what i suggest you put in:
