Quality issues viewing JPEG over DLNA on BDP S580

Hi

I have my bluray player set to stream videos music and picctures over DLNA from my Synology NAS.

Works very well for video esp since last sony firmware update that allows me to play .MKVs and .MP4s.

I do however have a problem viewing photos.

Lower resolution photos stream fine, but higher res ones above a couple of MB in size which have been taken by my Nikon D50/D90  (most of my collection...) are extremely pixellated and really unviewable.

My assumption is that, since I can view these photos ok over DLNA on other devices (eg my iphone), this is a Sony firmware issue but I don't know since no-one else has posted this problem. If it is a sony issue does anyone know if it is going to be adressed.

Any thoughts anyone?

Much appreciated

Well, i got to the bottom of this eventually, so thank you for all your suggestions.

On the Synology DSM there is a media server button. Click this and there is a dma compatibility tab and under this is a list of devices. My sony bluray was correctly shown as being a "Sony bluray player".

However, Synology support asked me to change this device profile to that of "WD TV" and low and behold it all worked. Not sure whether the fault was at the sony end or the synology end but changing this setting on the synology fixed it anyway... so if there is an equivalant setting on other dlna servers it might be worth having a go if you are having problems.

None of this was on any synology or sony forum but synology support emailed me this   so I am now very happy!

What is your DLNA server from your Synology NAS? This is probably the source of the problem (sony profile).

Do you know serviio.org dlna server ?

Thanks for the reply

Synology has a dlna server built in and to be frank I dont fancy messing with the linux OS by installing another dlna client on it. If I know for sure that is the problem I'll bite the bullet.

The fact that lower quality jpegs render fine but not higher quality ones has me puzzled...

but I kow I can stream high quality from my NAS to other devices without degradation so i suspect it is the sony but cannot be sure....

I guess you are right this seems to be a sony's problem.

I bought Sony BDP-S780 some days ago (firmware M07.R.0427)  and connected it through HDMI to my Philips

40PFL7664H/12 HDTV (also DLNA compatible).

On my PC I am running Twonky DLNA server and test streaming my JPEG pictures either directly to the TV or through the S780:

1. Philips TV is displaying all pictures perfectly fine

2. S780 displays high quality pictures from my Canon EOS550D (5184x3456 pixels) totally blurred

3. If I copy the same pictures to the USB stick and insert to the S780, they are displayed much better than through

DLNA (but definitely worse than if I stream them directly to the Philips TV ...)

Do you know guys does it make sense to report this directly to Sony, or ist is a lost time ?

Thanks,

Hey tonythehoolet,

Thank you so very much for posting this.  We just bought a new Canon 14.1 megapixel camera today, and the pictures I uploaded to my Synology were quite blurry/pixelated, when compared to the pictures I had posted with our previous Canon 12.1 megapixel camera.  I was very frustrated, until I came upon your post.  What a life saver!  Thank you, my Irish friend!!
