Hi! I have recently bought the SA SW5 subwoofer. It was originally placed on the floor to the right of the TV, but my 2 little cats loved jumping on top of it and clawing the front! I am considering placing it on a slightly raised open shelf in a solid wood built in cabinet under the TV. It will have to go on its side to fit, but I am hoping that as long as it faces outwards there shouldn’t be any issues. There are a few inches clearance on all sides. Will this affect its efficiency? Advice please? Thanks!
Hi @Jade0509 Subwoofers do not need to be seen. Often the best location is in a corner of a room. For example I used to have a corner TV cabinet with the subwoofer completely out of sight on the floor behind the cabinet. It produced excellent bass and enhanced low pitch audio.
Going on its side won’t matter.
Going on a shelf will, unless the shelf is thick enough not to resonate, and it will still matter if you have a rear port firing at the back of the shelf, if this is an enclosed space; it will sound all wrong.
Get a cat scratching post, and offer this to the cats instead. Put a doily on top of the sub so if they do try to climb on it, they slide off.
In extremis, a small water pistol may be effective, but try not to get any water in the sub 😛
