In the community, you asked us about Motionflow. What does it mean and how does it affect your TV?
You probably know that when you watch TV, what you’re actually looking at is a series of pictures (or frames). They’re shown in quick succession, so that you see no interruptions between them.
Except that, sometimes, you might see a gap! The human eye can detect subtle differences in the position of consecutive TV frames, registering them as a slight judder.
To combat this, Sony BRAVIA TVs have a feature called Motionflow.
You might have read about ‘native panel frequency’. This means the number of images a panel can display in one second.
Motionflow gives you a smoother, more natural picture by combining the native panel frequency (also known as the refresh rate) with other techniques:
- Frame insertion (or ‘interpolation) creates and inserts new motion-compensated frames between the original TV frames.
- LED Backlight Control controls the backlighting for smooth motion (also known as backlight blinking).
- Image Blur Reduction cleans up blurred objects in an image to give a clearer picture.
Do you notice that your TV picture is blurred when watching fast-moving scenes, sports or moving text banners/animation? Try different Motionflow modes to reduce the effect.
BRAVIA models with the Motionflow menu have a selection of special modes to enhance viewing. You can choose the mode to suit you – including a custom setting.
For movies, try the ‘True Cinema’ setting. This uses software to restore the original film motion from broadcast contents. Films are shot at 24 frames per second but as broadcast runs at 25 fps, they need to be converted using a complicated method called 3:2 pulldown and this can introduce motion issues. By selecting True Cinema, viewers can see the film as it was intended and with a cinematic look.
Find the different Motionflow modes by pressing Home on your BRAVIA remote control and selecting Action Menu>Picture>Advanced Settings>Motion>Motionflow>type of Motionflow effect.
NOTES:
2014 BRAVIA TVs with screen sizes between 32” and 48” do not feature the Motionflow settings menu. On those models, Motionflow is always active.
