I recently got a SONY VGN-FE21B, the configuration on paper shows 80 GB of HDD. But I could locate only 67 GB(C and D drives). Can someone tell me how to view the actual HDD size and if a discepancy of 13-15 GB is ok.
The majority of the missing space will be taken up by a hidden recovery partition. This partition allows you to restore the computer to its original state if you have any problems. It also allows you to reinstall any of the programs & drivers.
You can make the space available if you really need it but you will then only be able to recover you system using the recovery DVDs you have probably already made.
I would recommend that you only remove the partition if you really need the space.

Hi k1cker,
Welcome to Club Vaio,
Please start a new thread when posting a different question...:smileyhappy:
To restore you Vaio you can either goto Start > All programs > Vaio Recovery tool and click on Vaio Recovery Utility or Insert the System Recovery disc set that's if you have created a recovery disc set...:smileyhappy:
Here is the Official Sony guide on how to recover a Vaio.. Simply select your model from the list...:smileywink:
You really shouldn't hijack someone elses' topic
Press F10 at bootup
Hello. I have the same "problem". Can you tell how to recover the space anyway? I bought 80Gb, not 60Gb....

You will only regain about 7.5Gb the remainder of the loss is down to the formatting of the drive and is irrecoverable.
You can use Partition Magic (a third party software) to recover this hidden space without losing your data. The rest of the "missing" space is in the difference in the measurement of a Gigabyte by the HDD manufacturers (1GB=1.000.000.000 bytes) and Windows (1GB=1.073.741.824 bytes, 2^30 bytes) so the 80GB are really 74.5 GB in windows. You can only recover up to 7.5 GB, which is the space the recuperation software reserves to itself.
If you boot up with your Recovery Disc inserted, choose 'Recover my Vaio' and choose the option to change partition sizes, you will be given the option to remove the Recovery Partition and re-size C: & 😧
You can even get rid of 😧 altogether. Please note that you will lose everything on your Vaio and it will be returned to the configuration when you bought it.
However, I would make at least two copies of the Recovery Discs before you remove the Recovery Partition.
