Alps Pointing device not working after Vaio update

Got a new FE 41S, as you can see from the forums there are various issues with the OS, i have had the Club Vaio start up web screen hang and also the screen resolution changes all the time. But as i update the system both from microsoft and Vaio slowly these problems will be ironed out.......the current problem is that at the weekend i downloaded the current Vaio updates and now my touch pad does not work. The logo in the corner of the screen has gone, it is not in the device manager, however there is the HID compliant driver/device present, which i guess is my USB mouse which works fine. No good for when i want to go portable!! I have looked in my drivers file and the drivers are there, i have double clicked to reinstall which it did, but again nothing present in the device manager. I have tried turning on and off with the USB disconnected, to no avail. How can i get it to work??? Help please......thinking of reinstalling the OS and starting a fresh....it would appear that some times the updates create more problems.....and one out there getting the same issues???? I am losing a lot of hours in my life on this!?!?!?!? J

Hi julesdm

Goto Device Manager, double click Mouse and Other Pointing Devices.

Then right click once on PS2 mouse and select properties.

Select the 'Driver' tab and click on Update driver.

A new Hardware Update Window will appear, select Install from a list or specific location (advanced) and click next

The window now changes select 'Don't search I will choose the driver to install' and click next.

If 'Alps Pointing-device' (possibly Alps Pointing-device for Vaio) appears in the new window, select it and click next.. (if the 'Alps Pointing-device' does not appear in the list remove the tick from 'Show Compatible Hardware' and select Alps Electric from the Manufacturer column then 'Alps Pointing-device' (possibly Alps Pointing-device for Vaio) from the model column and then click next.

Wait for the driver to install then click Finish, a System Settings Change window should now appear prompting you to Resart your Computer and click Yes to restart.....

I have done exactly as you said and found the alps driver, installed it, can see it in the driver details tab, then it disables my external USB mouse and the touch pad does still not work. I do not get the please restart computer screen.

I have also tonight recovered the computer (after backing up all my files) and still the touch pad does not work.....is it software or hardware....should i speak with PCWorld tomorrow???

Just coming back on this issue.

My external mouse now only works in one of the 3 usb sockets....after having followed your instruction twice....hence the two USB sockets that dont work.....if i keep device manager open and the driver tab screen for the mouse and other pointing device.....when i plug my mouse into one of the disabled sockets the driver screen changes to show that the Alps driver is now associated to it (and has an exclamation mark over it, obviously the mouse does not work here and so i cannot find out what the reason it is not working. When i switch back to the socket that responds the driver changes to Microsoft) i can see that the Alps driver has been associated with those two usb sockets.....therefore how do i assign the driver to the pad and not the HID compliant mouse (image of a mouse). I can only deduce that there must be another image/title/subfile that should be there for me to attach a driver to and make it work.....if i try your tested route one more time i will have no mouse left to operate the computer......is it the hardware???? do you think????

Thanks for your assistance Julian

Hi julesdm,

Has your touch pad ever worked..?

In Mouse & Other Pointing Devices remove all the mouse entries and then restart your Vaio, hopefully your touchpad should re-install with the new drivers..

Make sure your USB mouse is removed before you restart your Vaio..

I took my machine into the office today to speak with Sony direct and failing that PC World to exchange the machine.......and guess what......turned it on and the touch pad now works......as i have reinstalled the OS and saved all my files on my external drive.....thank goodness for them!!! Do you have any advice on how to progress installing updates etc and to prevent any future issues.....

 You're welcome Jules..

The simplest thing you can do is create a restore point before you install any updates etc..

Or you could purchase something like Acronis True Image 10 to create and store a backup image..

Depending on what you have created a backup of, you could restore your Vaio Operating system, applications, user settings, and all your personal data in the event of a fatal system crash or virus attack to as it was when you created the image..
