ASPI for DVD-ROM??

I have an app (Sega MD / MCD emulator) which cannot at the moment access my DVDROM drive in my RS402.
Apparently I need an ASPI layer / driver?
What is this? Can I intsall it for my DVDROM drive? Will it have untoward effects on anything else?

Create a restore point using Windows System Restore then install the ASPI layer from http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/driverdetail.jsp?language=English+US&filekey=aspi_471a2.exe...
