Attention VGN-CS11 users and SONY!! Problem with FAN!

Hi everyone!

If you have recently bought a new VGN-CS11 series notebook, I'd ask that you take a moment to read this post.

Since I unboxed the new notebook, I have been experiencing strange noises from the fan unit evey time it operates. Before, it used to be simply that every time the fan stopped working, it made a soft "growl" noise (probably due to some internal vibration) for a mere second or two. Recently, however, it has also begun to make a strange, barely audible "clicking sound" as the fan starts up and operates, accompanied by the "growl" at the end, like before. At first, I was led to believe that it was just the normal operating noise that the fan made (although quite annoying!), but due to these recent developments, I am more and more convinced that this is some problem or malfunction that perhaps, will only get worse with time.

Other CS11 users have already posted in the thread "Problem with fan!!" that they also experience this problem, and, from what I've been able to gather, it does not seem like an isolated problem... but this is what we need to confirm.

That is the purpose of this thread.

I would like to ask and encourage all CS11 users to post in this thread if they also experience the same "problem" with the fan (abnormal noises that are clearly distinguishable from normal operation) or anything fan-related, especially if you have experienced them since you bought the notebook and haven't done anything that could "provoke" them (like dropping the notebook or hitting it in some way, blocking the ventilation vents, etc...). This is to have a general scope that this is not an isolated problem that is only happening to a few, and that way, perhaps Sony will take an interest and take the necessary measures to correct this problem if this, in fact, turns out to be a generalised problem.

I have already created a new case with e-Support regarding this issue. Note that these are brand new laptops that have been out on sale for barely a month, and now would be a good time to correct any problems that may arise. If this turns out to be a common problem for most CS11 users, then we should all contact Vaio-Link or e-Support and report the problem, so that Sony will take this problem into consideration if enough people have it.

Remember: the sooner, the better!

Also, perhaps it would also be of interest that those CS11 users that DON'T experience this problem also post in this thread, to see how many DO and how many DON'T... it may be interesting to also know.

Ok... without taking any more of your time, I leave this thread to fellow CS11 users and to anyone that might be able to lend a helping hand. Thanks!!!

Hi again everyone!!

Sorry to have kept you all waiting, it's just that I lost connection to the net and I haven't been able to get online till today!! Even so, without my vaio I won't be able to connect regularly until I get it back.

Well, just a bit of a status report. My vaio was picked up on tuesday and today (friday) I've received an sms from Sony repair confirming that they had received the laptop at their repair centre in Germany. They say that it should be completed in 5 working days, so I don't expect to get it back until the first week of February. I really hope that what they say is true, that they replace the fan with another that actually works properly... I've been reading in other forums that people that tried to get this fixed got their laptops back, sayin the fan had been replaced but they once again had the same problem... well, maybe this was because they had them repaired in local stores without Vaio technicians like they would through vaio-link and Sony.

The truth is that those that have sent them to Sony are still waiting to get them back, so nothing can truly be said, yet.

Guess we'll have to wait then... and let's hope the next time i post will be with good news.

Hi coral pink!

I actually bought my CS from the sonystyle website, so I really don't know if through the store you bought it from can send it to sony. However, what I do know is that if the store is sonystyle, then they can arrange for the laptop to be sent for repairs to sony, but that's just what I've read on the net, and I really can't confirm it. However, you should try talking to them and see what they say.

If they can't do anything for you, try visiting the vaio support page on the net (http://www.vaio-link.com/flash/hub_cons.html). The number you have to call to get in touch with vaio-link technicians depends on your country, so i really can't help you there (unless you're from Spain!! ). Anyway, just select your country and look for contact details to see the phone number. Good luck, and don't worry, I'll post as soon as i get it back!

Hi Skyberia, pezbaerchen, lewchenko, maja-rossi, txuse, hpacheco, SHAZ47, recessional, mwikstrom, Nutzer21 & coral pink..

Without comparing your CS's I guess you cannot say if you're all hearing the same noise, therefore it would be difficult to know if this is normal or if your Vaio has another problem..

So with that in mind we have asked Vaio-Link Support to contact each of you individually..

Please check your registration contact details are correct (click here )..

Hello Thalamus,

A few posts back there's a link for an youtube video with the specific noise. After browsing YT again I only found three videos, and all with the same noise I'm getting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFdpRrRsAdc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMl9-VqQ1Ug

I already contacted eSupport and had a very friendly and polite Sony representative on the phone, offering to recall my VAIO but at that time he told me Sony wasn't aware it was a mass-spread issue so I politely refused his offer. I'll post the eSupport ticket in a bit as the website is down for maintenance.

ok here goes,

*** PHONE LOG 07-Jan-2009 Action Type: OUTGOING call
Called Mr Pacheco and introduced myself, and offered to collect the VAIO for repair
Mr Pacheco said that there were a lot of people reporting an issue with the fan noise on the CS series

I checked and advised that this was not an issue that we were aware of at present
I advised that in this situation all I can do is collect the VAIO for repair
Mr Pacheco asked how long a repair would take - I advised if the parts were in stock, generally 5 working days
Mr Pacheco said that he did not think a repair would resolve the issue and that it would come back
I said that all problems raised would be addressed whilst the VAIO was in the repair centre

Mr Pacheco asked if we would be issuing a recall on the CS series
I explained that this would be a very big operation and not something I would have the authority to authorise
I explained that as stated, we were not presently aware of this issue
Mr Pacheco decided not to have the computer collected

I advised that I would keep an eye out for similar cases and raise the issue if I started to see a lot
I asked Mr Pacheco to update the case if further assistance was required and thanked him for his time

*** NOTES 07-Jan-2009 Action Type: Info
Dear Mr. Pacheco,

Thank you for taking my call today. As discussed, I'll continue to monitor for similar cases. If there's anything further we can assist you with, please don't hesitate to update the case.
If you would prefer an e-Support agent to contact you by telephone, please update your case with your preferred contact number & a suitable timeframe between the hours of 8:00 to 18:00 GMT Monday to Friday.

Kind regards,
David Mulqueen
Sony Vaio-Link Team

Then, for some reason this happened:

*** CASE CLOSE 17-Jan-2009

User that closed the case is listed as "sa" I don't know if this is normal.

I have to emphasize the professionalism David displayed while calling me, shame it's not in his hands to solve my problem :slight_frown:

My wife’s Sony Vaio CS fan noise was a disaster. So disturbing starting every 20 sec. for a moment. I tried everything to force it to be quiet: switching power modes, undervolting (using RmClock), all of it without any significant result. Then I figured out that using an external cooling system could be a solution. It really was!!! I have bought and installed Zalman ZM-NC1000 cooling pad a notebook cooler. It works very quiet and keeps the processor at low temperature so the internal fan have no reason too spin at all. It is an acceptable solution for me as we use our Vaio as a home PC. I hope it could be helpful for you guys too.
Personally I am a ThinkPad T-60 happy user  I have bought Vaio for it’s design…
